The History of Longines

In 1832, Longines was founded by legendary watchmaker Auguste Agassiz. The company was founded in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, and is now considered a true classic within the watch community. Now owned by the Swatch Group, the manufacturer is best known for its aviator watches and chronographs, which they began producing as early as 1878. Longines has formed a deep-rooted relationship with the world of sports. They have been the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games fourteen times, beginning with the inaugural games in Athens in 1896. During the 1930s and 1940s, Longines produced some incredible sports chronograph watches using its own in-house movements.

Longines Pocket Watches

Longines is widely celebrated for its pocket watches. There are variations in both high-quality Swiss-made mechanical and more inexpensive quartz movements. During the 19th century, Longines introduced the 20H caliber, which was used for precise timing, something that later became synonymous with Longines.

Longines Wristwatches

The watch community would unanimously agree that Longines produce good-quality watches. Some of the more celebrated models that can be bought in-store today are the Heritage, and the Master collections. The price tags on Longines watches are somewhat low compared to other luxury watch brands, making them very affordable.

Are Old Longines Watches Valuable?

Yes! The quality of Longines watches is excellent, and plenty of watches dating 100 years plus are still ticking. The value of the watches is, naturally, based on the condition of the watch. The better the condition – the higher value. The most collectible Longines watches are wristwatches with original chronograph dials. Do you want to know the value of your Longines watches? Do Longines Watches Hold Their Value?

If you buy vintage Longines watches, then you can surely expect the value to be steady and, hopefully, even increase. That is, as long as you don’t damage the watch. If you buy new Longines watches from a retailer, the value will decrease after the purchase has been made since the secondary market for new Longines watches is usually lower than the retail price. If you’re concerned about the secondary value, we highly recommend vintage Longines.

The Most Expensive Longines Watch

Longines is always an interesting brand in quality watch auctions. Here are three notable sales.

– A tortoise-shaped desk timepiece sold for $875,000.

– A gold pocket watch personally owned by baseball player Babe Ruth sold for $750,000.

– A gold wristwatch personally owned by Albert Einstein sold for $596,000.
