£20k antique price guide on "rare" envelope

Those looking for accurate antique price guides might be inspired to have their items valued by news that an envelope could fetch up to £20,000 at auction.

An envelope has been given an antique price guide of £20,000 despite costing just four pence to send in 1840.

It has been described as a "stunning item" by Dominic Savastano, a stamps expert at Spink, who also noted it was "outstanding and rare" due to the combination of stamps on it, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.

The product has a block of four Two Pence Blue and two Penny Blacks and had a letter inside that was sent to law firm Dickson and Stuart Esquires, of 17 India Street.

Mr Savastano added: "It is a big rarity to find this combination of stamps on a cover and that is what makes it something very special."

These comments come after he noted last week that Penny Black stamps are not actually that rare after one went under the hammer for £800 at an auction in London, the BBC reported.
