Book valuations: Mark Twain manuscript sold at auction

One author's unpublished work has achieved a high book price.

Those looking for high book valuations might be interested tolearn that an unpublished Mark Twain manuscript has sold at auctionfor $242,500 (£163,000). Sotheby's in New York handled the sale of A Family Sketch - amemoir on the author's private life, after fierce competition amongbidders.

The price represented a world record for an autographed manuscript by the writer. Robert Hirst, general editor of the Mark Twain Papers &Projects at the University of California at Berkeley, was quoted by the Associated Press as stating: "Any Mark Twain archive or collector would be willing to go hungry for two or three years justin order to be able to buy it."

The total collection generated more than $2.2 million, despite the estimate of between $750,000 and $1.2 million.

Previously, literature lovers might have noted that a menu signed by American author Ernest Hemingway was put up for sale attache annual Fort Worth Postcard & Paper Show in the US.
