High art valuation for Edvard Munch print sale

Art appraisals could take the high price achieved for one print into consideration.

A print of Edvard Munch's Madonna has been sold for £1.25 million and has become the most expensive such item ever to be bought in the UK.

In news that may have been noted by those seeking an art valuation, Bonhams awarded the hand-coloured piece to a private buyer from the US.

The item was previously given a price estimate of between £500,000 and £700,000, perhaps underlining the lucrative nature of antique print sales in 2010.

In addition, the work is dated from 1895 and has become the second most expensive print to be sold globally.

Responding to news of the purchase, Robert Kennan, head of prints at Bonhams, stated: "It has been a real privilege selling such a wonderful image and it fully deserves to have achieved such a fantastic price."

Moreover, art valuation professionals may already be aware that Christie's has arranged the sale of 60 Richard Avedon pictures in Paris this November.
