A £400 antique price guide has been placed on a fake £20 note printed by the Nazis in an attempt to wreck the British economy.

Operation Bernhard - as it was known - enlisted prisoners in concentration camps to produce the bogus items as the Germans planned to flood the UK market with £134 million worth of counterfeit money.

Richard Westwood-Brookes, from auctioneers Mullock's in Ludlow, Shropshire - where the auction is set to take place - said: "These notes are incredibly rare because most were destroyed."

And he told the Guardian it was "ironic" that quantitative easing was brought in to improve the financial crisis, adding: "[The Nazis] clearly believed that in addition to a physical attack on the UK they could also wreak havoc with the country's economy."

This sale will take place alongside paintings produced by Adolf Hitler, which have an antique price guide of £150,000.
