Stanley Spencer painting goes for more than twice its antique price guide

A painting by Stanley Spencer has gone under the hammer for more than twice its antique price guide.
The artwork - entitled Hilda and I at Pond Street - had a pre-sale estimate of £600,000 but managed to fetch £1.43 million when it went up for auction at Sotheby's, the BBC reports.
It has broken the record for the highest valued Spencer piece to be sold after his painting called The Crucifixion was purchased for £1.32 million.
James Rawlin, a senior director at Sotheby's, said there was an "amazing response" to the piece and the auction house was "absolutely delighted".
He added it "really helps to establish Spencer as one of the central figures of figurative art in Britain in the 20th Century".
This comes after an LS Lowry painting - The Steps, Irk Place - went under the hammer for £713,000, more than its antique price guide of between £400,000 and £600,000.
