A canvas picture of a black and white Coca-Cola bottle has beaten its antiques valuation to sell for $35.36 million (£22.1 million) at auction.

The Andy Warhol piece - which went under the hammer at Sotheby's in New York yesterday (November 9th) - had a previous price guide of between $20 million and $25 million.

According to the auction house, the item is a "landmark in the artist's creation of his pop-art style and a choice of commercial imagery loaded with provocative symbolism about America".

Other lots that were sold included a piece by Francis Bacon entitled A Figure In Movement, which fetched more than $14 million, despite having an antiques valuation of between $7 million and $10 million.

This comes after a George Stubbs horse painting was given a price guide of between £10 million and £15 million before it goes up for sale at Sotheby's on December 8th.
